Scout Night Hike - Taronga Zoo to Balmoral Scout Hall via Chowder Bay

Event information

Registrations for this event are closed.

The walk will be follow the well-defined walking track from the lower entrance at Taronga Zoo (not the chair lift entrance but the one closest to the pedestrian crossing 150 metres further up the hill) through the Sydney Harbour National Park to Chowder Bay, up the hill to Georges Heights then Middle Head Road,  Methuen Ave, Wolseley Rd and Coronation Drive to Balmoral Oval (unfortunately the stairs at the back of Balmoral Oval off Middle Head Rd are not available to us as they are locked at 1800hrs during winter).

Scouts/Venturers should bring the following items:

A SMALL HAND TOWEL TO DRY YOUR FEET IF WE HAVE TO GO SHOES-OFF FROM THE END OF CHOWDER BAY BEACH TO THE WALKWAY BELOW RIPPLES RESTAURANT (HIGH TIDE FORECAST)

  • uniform
  • small back pack
  • sturdy walking boots
  • warm clothes (including a beanie)
  • a waterproof jacket (if weather looks damp)
  • a good headlamp or torch is essential (spare batteries are also highly recommended)
  • full water bottle (there are limited places to re-fill on the journey)
  • small snack (fruit etc)

Although the walk will be following pre-existing tracks/roads, some sections of track are uneven, muddy and/or poorly maintained. In a number of spots, building materials related to track work have been left beside the walkway that represent a tripping hazard. Some sections of the path run close to steep cliffs - some, but not all, of which have been fenced. Before commencing the hike Scouts/Venturers will be informed of the need for caution and to remain on the walking track at all times. Courtesy towards other walkers and fellow Scouts/Venturers will be reinforced.

Members who are are unwell, should not attend.
